Board of Directors Meeting

April 6, 2006

ATTENDEES: Heman Adams, Jackie Boss, Scott Cobble, Phil Friedman, Ron Harden, Lynne Hull, Joel Hurmence, Joe Martin, Bill Miller, Shelagh Tupper, John Waddell.

OTHERS PRESENT: Shiloh Hatcher from the Berthoud Hillsdale Park project.

CALL TO ORDER: President Joel Hurmence called the meeting to order at 7:10 P.M.

INTRODUCTIONS: The Board members introduced themselves to Shiloh.

REPORTS OF OFFICERS:

Treasurer’s Report – Waddell:
1. Report previously distributed by email.
2. John will email Board members a copy of Form 990 when it is completed.

REPORTS OF COMMITTEES:

A. Programs – Boss:
1. Jackie arranged a Program in Loveland featuring the SUMA representative.
The room cost is $19.50. Bill will promote the program to the Sierra Club.
2. The Digiscoping class raised $282.00. Eleven people attended.
3. The four presenters for the May meeting held an organizing meeting last night.

B. Membership (report emailed previously) – Jones:
There were 13 chapter-only renewals.

C. Field Trips – Martin:
1. Joe wanted to know if it would be OK to give JAX gift cards to field trip leaders. Yes.
2. Bill thought it would be beneficial to work up a set of guidelines for field trip leaders.
3. One opening remains for the May 21 – May 25 canoe trip.
4. The Habitat Stamp or a fishing license is required to access the Watson Lake area

D. Sanctuary – Grant:
No update.

E. Birdathon Fundraising / T-shirts – Friedman:
1. Participants might need a Habitat Stamp.
2. Passing around a sign-up sheet at Program meetings resulted in a few participants.
3. Posters will sell for $2.00.
4. Phil drafted a letter to send to business regarding the Birdathon.

NEW BUSINESS:

A. Hillsdale Park Opening, Berthoud – Shiloh Hatcher:
1. He is the part-time arborist for Berthoud and full-time forestry specialist for Greeley.
2. Berthoud has spent the past five years building a park on eleven acres at the south
end of town. Berthoud has received some GOCO funding for the project. It should be
completed by June 16.
3. Berthoud will put together a brochure to highlight the park’s features.
4. Berthoud wants to partner with groups who can help people benefit from the project.
5. Joel wants to get a group together to recon the property for fieldtrips.

B. Bird Surveys for Soapstone – Friedman, Hurmence:
1. Fort Collins requests FCAS help for bird surveys. Six people have volunteered for the
the surveys but none in a leadership role.
2. Phil will conduct the raptor survey.
3. There will be a mileage reimbursement.
4. The migratory bird survey will occur twice a month.
5. The raptor nest search might be extended until June and will occur twice a month.
6. The RMBO will conduct the birding bird survey.
7. Training sessions will be on a weekday.

C. Garden Tour / Field Trip – Hull:
Bird gardens are desired.

OLD BUSINESS

A. Formation of a Local Birding Club Organization under FCAS auspices – Komar:
Tabled

B. Waterford Press brochure update – Johnston:
1. In the final stages of going to the printer – selecting colors.
2. Phil and Joel let Kroll know they could be an underwriter for the brochures.
3. The Kroll-Factual Data donation to AOC/FCAS is its largest single donation under that
corporate name.

C. Liability insurance – next step – Dillon/Friedman:
There is nothing new pending the Form 990-EZ submission to the IRS.

D. Form committee to book speaker, create plans for October Silent Auction – Hurmence:
Joel would like to get this rolling by the May meeting. Jackie is leaving the Board in July.

E. Open Positions – Conservation, Finance/Fundraising Chairs – Hurmence:
The Board is getting by.

F. Review / update progress on 2006 Goals – Hurmence:
1. Joel believes the Board is progressing satisfactorily.
2. Joel proposes the Board meet during the summer. The Board agreed.

NAS/AC BUSINESS
A. Audubon Rendezvous set for Mt. Princeton on Saturday August 26 – Early –All:
It has been moved up from October so that families would be more able to attend.

B. FCAS to host Audubon Colorado Board meeting Sept 9 – Miller:
1. Need to find a low cost venue near a take out business.
2. Joel suggested putting a committee together to look for a suitable meeting location.
Heman suggested the Ben Delator room at the main library.

REMINDERS
A. Pawnee Grasslands IBA Project Meeting April 15 – Windsor:
Joel reminded the Board of the opportunity to participate.
